CHAPTER TEN
After they cleared the rooms and the area around the cabin to make sure both men had left, they both got changed and cleaned up. Grace worked with a furious intensity to get some meals ready. She chopped vegetables for roasting in tinfoil packets on the grill and for salad. She checked the cookies she had put in the oven. Dakota was outside setting up tents.
Dakota popped his head into the kitchen. âStill all clear. I donât think they are coming back. I got my stuff done. Do you need any help?â
Her heart lurched a little when she saw himâ¦a very old response that she had thought was long dead. The sparkle in his eyes and the welcoming softness of his features had been what first attracted her to him so many years ago. His voice had always calmed her.
âYou can chop veggies. The first meal the guests will have is tuna sandwiches with salad. A total revision of what I had in mind. Weâll grill steak and veggies for dinner, so all I have to do is get some snacks done.â
Dakota walked over to the counter and picked up the knife. âYouâre kind of in your element when you cook. I always thought that about you.â
The warmth she heard in his voice made her heart flutter. She had worked as a cook all through college, never realizing how much it would benefit her in her undercover work. âThanks, Dakota.â
The sound of a car pulling up outside caused them both to stop what they were doing. She glanced at the clock on the wall. It was still half an hour before the first guest was due to arrive.
âGive me a second.â Still holding the chopping knife, Dakota slipped out of the kitchen and headed to the living room.
She grabbed a knife as well and hurried to back Dakota up. Dakota stood at the big front window. âFalse alarm. Early arrivals.â
The door swung open. Mr. Wilsonâs son, Justin, stepped in. From the moment sheâd met him, Grace thought he looked like a surfer who had gotten lost on his way to the ocean. Deeply tanned skin and long blond hair, goofy expression.
Dakota quickly set the knife on a nearby table.
Justin stepped aside so his friends could enter. The first one who came in was also tan and in good shape but with spiky brown hair bleached at the ends.
âSorry weâre a little early,â Justin said. âLooks like we got here before Dad.â
âItâll be a minute until I have something for you to eat.â She held up her knife. âIâm just preparing some things now.â
âNo problem. Weâll just chill.â Justinâs friend was studying his surroundings in a way that indicated heâd not been here before. âThis is Evan.â Justin punched his friend in the shoulder.
A third man holding a cooler entered the room. His face blanched when he saw Grace. The curly-haired kid who had picked up the pangolin. Grace knew enough to make sure her expression did not give anything away.
